How do the speakers prep for TEDxSanFrancisco?
We often get the question: how do speakers prep for their TED talk? We often get the question: how do speakers prep for their TED talk? Here are the 4 most important tips we share with our speakers every year, hopefully they'll help you too.
1. ONE CORE IDEA Build your talk around one core idea. It is very easy to get lost in your own pool of ideas, but you need to chose one. That’s probably the most important part. This allows the speaker to focus on a very specific issue, and makes the talk even more compelling for the audience.
2. USE A COACH It is always a good idea to work with a coach, for your talk and for your slides. Even the most experienced speakers get ‘external’ help to prep their talk. A coach can also be a friend. Coach's role is to make the speaker reflect on its talk and to provide input on how to structure and deliver the talk on stage.
3. PREPARE Prepare, prepare and… prepare. Preparation is key. If not weeks, it can be months. Our speakers always start preparing at least 4 or 5 months prior to the event.
4. BE YOURSELF This is the best you can be and authenticity always prevails.Speakers need to focus on what they're good at, and use that to their advantage when delivering a TED talk.If a speaker is good at emotional storytelling, then he or she should use storytelling in their talk to provoke emotions in the audience. And if a speaker is very good in explaining complex ideas with data, then he or she should tailor the talk accordingly.
Here's what Chris Anderson, TED's curator has to say about great public speaking in this 7 minute talk:
